Job Summary:
The Avian Pathologist is responsible for diagnosing and managing the health and diseases of avian species. This role requires expertise in avian pathology, disease surveillance, and providing veterinary support to ensure the health and well-being of avian populations. The Avian Pathologist will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement effective disease control and prevention strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Conduct necropsies, post-mortem examinations, and histopathological analyses to diagnose avian diseases.
2. Perform laboratory testing, including bacteriology, virology, serology, and molecular diagnostics, to identify and characterize avian pathogens.
3. Analyze and interpret diagnostic test results, prepare reports, and provide recommendations for avian disease management.
4. Develop and implement disease surveillance programs to monitor avian populations for the presence of infectious diseases.
5. Collaborate with veterinarians and researchers to investigate outbreaks and provide guidance on disease control measures.
6. Provide expertise in avian health to support research projects related to avian diseases and contribute to scientific publications.
7. Advise on biosecurity measures, vaccination protocols, and other preventive strategies to minimize the risk of disease transmission.
8. Participate in the development of avian health policies and guidelines for regulatory bodies, industry organizations, and government agencies.
9. Stay abreast of the latest advancements in avian pathology and contribute to continuing education programs for veterinary professionals.
10. Maintain accurate records of diagnostic findings, laboratory results, and other relevant data.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution.
2. Board certification or eligibility for board certification in Avian Pathology.
3. In-depth knowledge of avian anatomy, physiology, and pathology.
4. Proficiency in performing avian necropsies, histopathology, and laboratory diagnostics.
5. Strong understanding of avian infectious diseases, including viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens.
6. Ability to analyze and interpret diagnostic test results and communicate findings effectively.
7. Experience in developing and implementing disease surveillance programs for avian populations.
8. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills in avian disease management.
9. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
10. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including scientific report writing.
11. Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and effectively interact with stakeholders.
12. Proficiency in using relevant software and laboratory equipment for avian diagnostics.
13. Commitment to staying updated with advances in avian pathology through continuous professional development.
